Ted McAleer, Executive Director USTAR [ Back to top ]

Ted McAleer is currently the Executive Director of the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative. Prior to assuming this position, Ted was the Director of Business Development for University of Utah's Technology Venture Development organization. Ted has 20 years of experience in technology innovation; business development; product, services and operations management in both start-up and mature corporations. He has been Chief Operating Officer for Teleoptic Digital Imaging, LLC and the Sr. Director of Implementation services at Campus Pipeline, Inc. He also has worked for SunGard SCT, Procter and Gamble, Pepsi Co. and the US Army. He holds a MBA from Harvard Business School, a Master of Engineering from the University of Virginia and BS in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Dixie College, St. George

Bill Pratt is the director of USTAR outreach activities in Southern Utah and is managing the High Performance Composites and Materials areas state-wide for USTAR. He works with a variety of promising high growth businesses located in both southern Utah as well as other rural areas in the state with a focus on connecting them to the Utah's research Universities. He has over 30 years of experience in business development, technology development and management, and most recently served as the chairman of SUU's Integrated Engineering & Technology Department. He has formed two startup companies dealing with highly damped structural composites developed for the Air Force under the Small Business Innovative Research program. He holds five patents for processes and concepts related to his research. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from BYU, a Masters of Engineering Management from BYU, and a BS in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Curtis S. Roberts, Northern Utah TOIP Director [ Back to top ]
Weber State University, Ogden

Curt Roberts is the Vice Provost for Innovation and Economic Development at Weber State University. In this capacity he serves as the Director of the Northern Utah Technology Outreach Center for USTAR. In this capacity Curt works with private and public leaders to help build businesses in key economic clusters that add to the economic and employment base in Northern Utah. Prior to joining Weber State Curt served as a Vice President for Nike, Inc., based in Beaverton, Oregon. His most recent role at Nike was Vice President and General Manager of Vision, Timing, and Tech Ventures. Prior to this Curt was Vice President for Global Strategy where he oversaw the development of Nike's short and longer-term strategy for it's corporate portfolio of brands. Prior to joining Nike Curt served as Chairman and CEO of PeaceHealth, based in Eugene, Oregon. PeaceHealth is a regional healthcare delivery system including three hospitals, a multi-specialty group medical practice, and several joint ventures. Prior to PeaceHealth Curt was a Senior Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, a leading international management consulting firm, based in Los Angeles, California. Curt holds a BA in Economics, summa cum laude, from Weber State University and a MBA with honors from Harvard Business School.

Steven Roy, Central Utah TOIP Director [ Back to top ]
Utah Valley State College, Orem

Mr. Steven Roy is the director of USTAR outreach and innovation activities in central Utah including the Mountainland Region. In this capacity he works with private and public leaders to help build businesses in key economic clusters that add to the economic and employment base in Central Utah. He has a keen interest in making sure that entrepreneurs and ideas emanating from his region are connected to the state's innovation and research network. Prior to assuming this position Mr. Roy was a certified Six Sigma Black Belt employed by Sun Microsystems, Inc.. Mr. Roy has 15 years of experience in organizational development, strategic change management, executive coaching and process reengineering within the high technology sector. Mr. Roy has worked for Sun Microsystems, Inc., Andersen Consulting, LLP, and Brigham Young University, with consulting clients such as Intel, Inc., Applied Materials, Inc, and Siebel, Inc.. Mr. Roy holds a Master of Organizational Behavior from Brigham Young University's (BYU) Marriott School of Management and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology also from BYU.

Alan J. Walker, Eastern Utah TOIP Director [ Back to top ]
Utah State University Extension, Vernal

Prior to assuming this Position, Alan was the Director of Gas Supply for Questar, a vertical integrated energy company.  Alan has over 25 years of experience in energy industry management in petroleum engineering, natural gas trading and derivative, regulatory affairs, and marketing with Questar, Amoco, and General Electric.  He also served in the US Army (active and reserve components) for thirty years as a Special Forces officer, completed two combat tours in the Philippines and Afghanistan, then retired as a colonel.  Alan holds an MBA in Production Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from West Point. 

Suzanne Winters, Ph.D. Salt County TOIP Director [ Back to top ]
Miller Innovation Center, SLCC, Sandy

Dr. Winters is the Salt Lake County Outreach Director for the USTAR. In this role, she works with a variety of high growth, start-ups and entrepreneurs, developing new ideas. Prior to joining USTAR, Dr. Winters worked for Battelle, a non-profit contract research and development company in the commercialization of technology, helping to move research from the laboratory to the commercial sector. Dr. Winters served as Science Advisor for the State of Utah under O. Michael Leavitt with the responsibility to advise the Governor on issues relating to science and technology policy and economic development. With nearly 30 years experience, she has worked for both medium and start-up businesses, primarily focused in the biomedical device and artificial organ arena. Dr. Winters' holds a Bachelor degree in Chemistry and a Doctorate in Pharmaceutics, holds several patents and is the author of numerous scientific and public policy publications.
